APPENDICITIS FEARS RUSH LUCY TO OAKLAND CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOR AN AFTERNOON IN THE WAITING ROOM
After spending the night with a 106 degree fever Lucy is feared to have appendicitis so the family take her to the emergency room and spend the day navigating the use of their HMO.

CONSULTATION WITH MR.JIM PHILPOT
Death and Taxes registers with SCORE (Service Core Of Retired Executives) an organization that provides free professional resources and expert advice to small businesses by pairing retired corporate executives with small business owners. Death and Taxes have their first consultation with Mr. Jim Philpot, the founder of the "Speedy Oil Change" franchise. (Now retired.)
Mr. Philpot agrees to continue counseling the Death & Taxes, Inc. executives in the development of their business plan and improving their marketing efforts.

MARKETING MEETING
After the lengthy board meeting discussion concerning the assembling and disseminating of press kits, the executives organize a phone conference with members of the Marketing Sub-Committee. Matthew Jesse Jackson, Lisa Melandri, and Allen Spore discuss what elements would best represent the company and who the target recipients should be.

Throughout the month of August
D&T was collecting addresses, preparing and sending out press kits, and following up with reporters. The company tried to cut expenses by using recycled office supplies and made frequent trips to the Center for Creative Reuse in Oakland. |

Lucy Fletcher starts kindergarten through the Oakland public school system, trimming over $900 per month from the family’s budget. |

PATENT PENDING
Death & Taxes uses the Nolo Press publication “Patent Pending in 24 Hours” to literally complete a patent application within the stated time frame. Prior to the start of this project, neither executive knew what they were about to invent. Exhausted, the stopped at 4:00am and picked things up again the following day. |

The family gets an inexpensive “all-you-can-eat” dinner as part of a fundraiser for their daughter’s school. The evening marks the first dining-out experience since the beginning of the year.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY MEETING WITH PG&E
A Pacific Gas and Electric employee visits the executives to relight the pilot lights on the heaters and suggests several energy savings techniques, including the idea to turn off the pilot lights on the gas stove and use a match to light burners instead. This strategy is expected to save the company up to $.08 cents per month in natural gas costs. |
